Online inspiration: YouTube

Although I'm writing this post at the start of British summer time - the clocks went forward last night and we're all looking forward to longer days, brighter weather and an end to winter lockdown - I thought I'd take a moment to share some of the online resources that have got me, and fellow members, through the long winter months, starting with YouTube.

YouTube started sharing its user's home-made videos back in 2005 and is now the second most-visited website after Google (who now actually own it), with more than 500 hours of content uploaded to YouTube each minute. And luckily for us, some of it is quilt-related.

The larger American online retailers have leapt at the chance to connect with potential customers and regularly film really high-quality tutorials, the most famous being Jenny Doan of the Missouri Star Quilt Company, who posts a tutorial every Friday morning. The Fat Quarter Shop and Shabby Fabrics also post most weeks and have a back catalogue that could keep us all occupied for years.

Fabric manufacturers Riley Blake also post some lovely tutorials with their new collections and individual fabric and pattern designers, like Lori Holt, Lisa Bongean, Sherri Mc Connell and Edyta Sitar, have also posted tutorials, show-and-tells and studio tours on their own channels.

And if you're after something short and snappy while you stop for a tea break try a quick block tutorial with Teresa Downunder. There really is something for everyone, but to save you having to look at it all, here are some recommendations: -

Glenys D has found Threads magazine's Threads Sewing channel really useful for mastering sewing techniques and also enjoys catching up with machine quilting whizz Leah Day on her eponymous channel.

Karen M recommends The Quilt Show channel and is enjoying Alex Anderson's regular 'lives' and Dee Christopher's weekly posts as she makes Jen Kingwell's Long Time Gone quilt. Karen also thought you'd enjoy SQ speaker Jane Alcock's block of the month on the Natasha Makes channel (you may remember them both from Sewing Quarter).

Nicola D has enjoyed having quilt-as-you-go demystified by Australian quilter Monica Poole, seeing just how many things you can do with a 60 Degree Diamond Ruler with Krista Moser and the joy de vivre of Dutch quilter Irene at Sugaridoo.

That's just a smidgeon of the content available, but we hope it's given you some new-to-you channels to try. Have a recommendation yourself? We'd love to know about it, so comment, email us or share in the WhatsApp group!
